LEED AP stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional. Every current LEED AP credential includes a specialty, such as LEED AP Building Design and Construction, or LEED AP BD+C.
For many architects, engineers, and construction professionals working on new buildings and major renovations, LEED AP BD+C is the most relevant specialty. However, LEED also offers specialties for commercial interiors, existing building operations, neighborhood development, and residential projects.
The right LEED AP specialty depends on the types of projects you work on, the phases of the building lifecycle you support, and the sustainability expertise you want to develop.

The LEED Green Associate exam measures general knowledge of green building practices and how to support professionals working on LEED projects. USGBC describes it as an appropriate credential for people who are newer to sustainability and LEED.
The LEED AP exam goes further. It evaluates knowledge of a specific rating system and how LEED requirements apply throughout the certification process.

To earn a LEED AP with specialty, you must first pass the LEED Green Associate exam.
Depending on the exam version and current registration options, candidates may be able to take a combined exam that includes both the Green Associate and LEED AP specialty sections. Candidates who already hold an active LEED Green Associate credential may register for the specialty-only exam.

LEED AP BD+C covers the design and construction phases of new buildings and major renovations, and USGBC identifies it as relevant to professionals serving the commercial, residential, education, and healthcare sectors. It's the specialty most architects, engineers, and construction managers reach for first.
LEED AP ID+C focuses on commercial interiors and tenant spaces — office, retail, and hospitality fit-outs where the scope stops at the interior rather than the building's core and shell.
LEED AP O+M is built for professionals managing the ongoing performance of existing buildings: benchmarking, preventive maintenance, and operational sustainability policy, rather than new design or construction.
LEED AP ND shifts the focus from a single building to the neighborhood or community scale, covering land use, walkability, connectivity, and infrastructure.
LEED AP Homes applies to residential design and construction, for professionals working on healthy, durable, resource-efficient homes.
For many architects, LEED AP BD+C is the most directly applicable specialty because it focuses on the design and construction phases of new buildings and major renovations.
That does not mean BD+C is the right choice for every architect.
An interior architect who primarily works on commercial fit-outs may find ID+C more relevant. An architect involved in campus planning or community development may benefit from ND. A residential specialist may choose Homes, while a professional focused on existing building performance may prefer O+M.

For architects, engineers, and construction professionals working on new buildings and major renovations, that specialty will often be LEED AP BD+C.
Professionals working primarily on interiors, existing buildings, neighborhood development, or homes should compare the other specialties before registering.
You don't need to hold LEED Green Associate yet to make this decision. Many candidates choose their specialty first, then decide whether to pursue Green Associate and the specialty exam together through the combined exam option, or separately.

The Green Associate credential demonstrates foundational knowledge of green building and LEED. It has no formal prerequisites, and the exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions completed during a two-hour testing period.

LEED v5 launched in April 2025 for the commercial BD+C, ID+C, and O+M rating systems. The LEED Green Associate v5 beta exam launched on April 28, 2026, followed by the LEED AP BD+C, ID+C, and O+M v5 beta exams on June 30, 2026.
LEED AP ND and LEED AP Homes continue to be based on LEED v4.
Materials developed for a previous version of LEED may not fully reflect the terminology, priorities, rating-system requirements, or exam specifications of the current version.

LEED AP credentials must be maintained through continuing education. LEED APs with specialty must earn and report 30 continuing education hours during each two-year reporting period. Six of those hours must be LEED-specific.

LEED v5 is the latest version of the LEED green building rating system for BD+C, ID+C, and O+M projects.

For LEED AP candidates, the transition to v5 means study materials should reflect the current rating system and exam specifications instead of relying only on content created for LEED v4. For an architect designing new buildings and major renovations, LEED AP BD+C may have direct professional relevance. For someone who works primarily on commercial interiors, existing buildings, neighborhood planning, or residential projects, another specialty may be more useful.
LEED AP credentials must be maintained through continuing education and renewal.
A LEED AP with specialty must earn and report at least 30 continuing education hours during each two-year reporting period. At least six hours must be LEED-specific.
The reporting period begins on the date the credential is earned and continues for two years minus one day. Credential holders are responsible for reporting eligible activities and renewing their credentials through their USGBC account.
